SIAE MICROELETTRONICA will attend at the first Space Microwave Week, a conference organized by the Radio Frequency Equipment and Technology Section of the European Space Agency (ESA), that will take place at the ESA Conference Bureau, in Noordwijk (The Netherlands) on 8th – 12th May 2023, and will present a scientific paper on an Gallium-Nitride High-Power Amplifier (HPA) intended for next-generation inter-satellite links.
The aim of the conference is to offer a new flagship international forum where microwave, millimetre-wave and terahertz technology developers, equipment designers, systems developers, operators, experts, universities, users and space agencies can openly network, discuss their ideas, share their experiences and formulate the challenges to be met.
Abstract: "The proposed architecture of the mm-wave GaN High-Power Amplifier (HPA) for the next generation of inter-satellite links targets a fractional bandwidth wider than 18% in the V-band spectrum to deliver 10 Gbit/s throughput for distances up to 5000 km. The core of the HPA is the MMIC Power Amplifier which covers the whole 59 – 71 GHz band and provides innovative topologies and high-efficiency performance by exploiting cutting-edge Gallium Nitride on Silicon Carbide (GaN-on-SiC) process. The V-band 10 W GaN HPA is based on the parallelization of eight amplification stages by means of a 1-to-8 splitter/combiner. Measurement results have shown a peak small-signal gain of 25.6 dB, 6.5% peak power-added efficiency (PAE), and a maximum P1dB of 40.3 dBm within the 59 – 71 GHz range. The first prototype features an unoptimized weight of 770 gr, whereas studies already highlight the possibility to match a half-kilogram weight target."
